Questions Every New Mom Should Ask About Booking a Newborn Photographer

I get asked a lot of questions. That's great! But sometimes I wish there was just one place I could send someone to get all of their questions answered.

Cue magical music.

This is that place!

I have compiled a list of the top 15 questions I get asked as a professional newborn photographer in Phoenix, Arizona. And don't worry, this will be in shotgun format, so you don't need to read 37 paragraphs for something that can be answered in one.

So without further ado, let's get answering your questions!

1. When should I book my newborn photographer?

The best time to book is no later than the start of your third trimester. Newborn photographers can book up quickly, so reaching out early helps make sure you have a spot on the calendar. But if you've already had your baby, still reach out! I may be able to work you into the schedule.

2. Is it ever too late to book newborn photos?

There is no such thing as "too late" for photos. That being said, the sweet spot for posed newborn photos is generally when baby is under two weeks old. They're still curled up and extra snuggly. Older babies can absolutely be photographed too, but we may need to adjust expectations a little.

3. What if my baby arrives early?

Newborn photographers understand that babies come when they want to come. We can't exactly put your due date on a calendar and tell baby, "Okay, see you Thursday!" Most photographers will work with you to adjust your session date if baby makes an early appearance.

4. What if my due date changes?

See answer above. But seriously, your photographer should understand that due dates are estimates, not reservations. If your photographer isn't flexible when it comes to something completely outside your control, you might want to think twice about booking them. Yes, I said it.

5. How much does newborn photography cost?

This is a loaded question! Every photographer has a different pricing structure. Some include all of the edited images, while others offer packages or charge separately for digitals, prints, albums, and wall art.

Before booking, make sure you know exactly what is included so there aren't any surprises later.

6. Why is newborn photography so expensive?

A LOT goes into newborn photography that you don't necessarily see in the final image.

There is training involved in safely handling and posing newborns, along with insurance, cameras, lighting, backdrops, wraps, props, editing software, editing time, business expenses...the list goes on.

You aren't just paying for someone to push a button on a camera. You're paying for their experience, safety knowledge, time, and the finished artwork they create for you.

7. Is newborn photography worth it?

I can answer this question with a couple questions of my own.

Will your baby ever be small enough to fit in your hands again?

Will you ever get this exact version of your family back?

And wouldn't it be pretty great to have those memories hanging on your walls instead of living exclusively on your phone?

I think we know where I stand on this one.

8. How do I choose the right newborn photographer?

Ask those questions, mama!

Does the photographer come to your home? How long have they been in business? What is included in their packages? Do you like their editing style? Are they prompt when responding to messages? Do you feel comfortable with them?

There are lots of things that go into this decision, so do your research. And please, don't choose your photographer based solely on who has the cheapest price.

10. What should I look for in a newborn photographer?

Look for someone whose work you genuinely love AND someone you trust with your brand-new baby. Beautiful photos are important, obviously. But so are safety, experience, communication, and finding someone whose personality makes you feel comfortable.

You're going to be tired. Your house may be a mess. Your baby may poop on someone's blanket. You want a photographer who isn't going to make you feel like you need to have your life together first.

11. Should I hire an in-home or studio newborn photographer?

This really comes down to what works best for your family!

With an in-home photographer, you don't have to pack up your newborn, diaper bag, feeding supplies, and approximately 47 other things just to leave the house.

Personally, I think that's a pretty good deal.

12. What's the difference between posed and lifestyle newborn photography?

Lifestyle photography focuses more on natural interactions and documenting your family as you are.

Posed newborn photography focuses on carefully posed portraits of your baby, often using wraps, backdrops, and props.

Neither is "better." They're just different styles! The important thing is figuring out which one makes you look at the photos and think, Yep. That's exactly what I wanted.

But if you still can't decide, it is possible to have both!

13. Do I need both Fresh 48 and newborn photos?

Nope! But they serve completely different purposes.

Fresh 48 photos document those first hours after birth: hospital bracelets, tiny fingers, family meeting baby, and all those brand-new details.

Newborn photos are typically more styled and posed and happen during those first couple of weeks at home.

If you want both the raw, brand-new hospital memories AND beautiful newborn portraits, doing both can be really special.

14. Do I need to know how to pose my baby?

Absolutely not. In fact, please don't stress about this!

That's my job. Your photographer should know how to safely pose and handle your baby. You just need to show up with your baby and let us do the rest.

And if baby decides they don't like a particular pose? We move on. Baby is the boss.

15. What should I do next if I want to book?

Take a deep breath. You've officially survived the newborn photographer interrogation.
