Parents gently cradle a swaddled newborn; father kisses mother’s head in a soft, loving studio portrait against a white background at their home in Phoenix Arizona.

One of the questions I get asked the most is:

"What should we wear for our newborn session?"

If you too are wondering what to wear for your newborn session in Phoenix, Arizona, don't worry—I've got you covered!

The good news is that choosing outfits doesn't have to be complicated. My goal is to create timeless images that you'll still love 20 years from now, and what you wear plays a big part in that.

Here are my favorite tips for keeping everyone looking natural, comfortable, and beautifully coordinated. And if you're looking for more tips on preparing for your newborn session, check out this post: 3 simple tips for planning your newborn session.

What Should Baby Wear?

Honestly? Baby has no dress code.

For most of your newborn session, your baby only needs a diaper. I bring everything else with me, including beautiful wraps, bonnets, hats, tie-backs, and other carefully chosen accessories in a variety of colors and textures.

If there's a sentimental outfit, blanket, or family heirloom you'd like to include, I'd absolutely love to incorporate it into a few images. Otherwise, there's no need to stress about finding the perfect newborn outfit before your session.

What Should Parents and Siblings Wear for their newborn session in Phoenix Arizona?

The best outfit is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

For family photos, I always recommend sticking with neutral or earthy tones. Think:

  • Cream

  • Beige

  • Soft gray

  • Taupe

  • Warm browns

  • Sage green

  • Dusty blue

  • Muted blush

These colors photograph beautifully, keep the focus on your family, and create a timeless look that won't feel dated years from now.

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, try mixing different shades and textures. A knit sweater, linen dress, or soft cotton shirt adds depth and interest without being distracting. Take a look at these different sibling images to see what I mean.

What to Avoid Wearing

There are a few things I recommend skipping for your newborn session.

Large Baby Headbands or Oversized Bows

While they're adorable for everyday wear, oversized bows can hide your baby's tiny features. Those sweet little cheeks, wispy hair, and delicate expressions deserve to be the star of the show.

Everyone Wearing the Exact Same Color

Matching doesn't have to mean identical.

Instead of putting everyone in solid white or all tan, try coordinating complementary colors. Mixing neutrals with subtle texture creates a much more natural, polished look.

Clothing with Logos or Large Graphics

Words, logos, and bold graphics tend to pull attention away from what matters most—your family.

Simple, classic clothing keeps the images feeling timeless and ensures your photographs won't look tied to a specific trend years from now.

Don't Stress About Looking Perfect

If you're a brand-new parent, you've got enough on your plate already.

One of the biggest reasons families love my in-home newborn sessions is because I make the process as easy as possible. I'll even help you coordinate outfits before your session if you're unsure what works best.

Whether you're deciding between two dresses or wondering if everyone's colors go together, just send me a quick photo. I'm always happy to help.
